A structured literature review was conducted to assess the release of micro- and nanoplastics (MNP) from food contact materials (FCM). Out of 1711 publications reviewed, only a limited number addressed nanoplastics, with most studies focusing on microplastics and using aqueous food simulants. Methodological deficiencies were noted in many studies, affecting the reliability of findings regarding MNP characteristics and quantities released.
