Longwood Gardens is offering an online sketching class for beginner landscape designers taught by Jessica Wolff, a registered landscape architect. The course runs Monday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. throughout August 2026 and focuses on practical drawing skills you'd actually use in landscape design work. You'll learn to sketch natural elements like trees and plants, practice different line types and techniques with various tools, and work through different drawing approaches—plain view, perspective, and section details. The goal is straightforward: get better at translating your design ideas into clear two-dimensional drawings that communicate your vision to clients and collaborators. This class counts as a required core component for Longwood's Landscape Design Certificate program, so it's not optional if you're pursuing that credential. The live-streamed format means you're joining from home, but you get three months of access to course materials after the class wraps up, which gives you time to review and practice what you've learned. Wolff brings real credentials to the role. She's a licensed landscape architect with experience at award-winning firms working on everything from residential gardens to large master plans, stormwater management, and urban streetscapes. She's also spent 11 years teaching design and graphics at schools including Northeastern and Boston Architectural College, and she's won teaching awards and published thesis work from Harvard's Graduate School of Design. She knows both the practice side and how to actually teach it.
