Apple is gearing up for the launch of the iPhone Fold, aiming to avoid the pitfalls that plagued Samsung's early foldable devices. Reports indicate that Apple is considering a built-in screen protector with enhanced hardness and scratch resistance. Folding phones face unique vulnerabilities, including issues with the display crease, the fragile ultra-thin glass, and the hinge mechanism. These factors make them prone to damage from dust and debris, as well as increased risk of shattering upon impact. To address these challenges, Apple is exploring the use of tougher protective materials. Unlike Samsung, which uses polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, Apple is looking into polyimide (PI) film as an additional layer of protection for its ultra-thin glass displays. PI film offers greater scratch resistance due to its superior surface hardness, despite being more expensive than PET. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the robustness of the iPhone Fold and distinguish it from competitors in the foldable market. In addition to the protective film, Apple is also reportedly modifying button placements to minimize damage to the internal components, particularly the ribbon cables that connect the two sides of the device. These proactive measures reflect Apple's commitment to improving the durability and usability of its upcoming foldable smartphone.
