Aptos, a blockchain technology company, faced a branding dilemma as they sought to establish themselves as a credible partner for institutional clients without losing their existing recognition. They approached Ashfall Studio, which was tasked with executing a brand redesign within a tight three-month timeline. The project included a complete overhaul of Aptos’ brand ecosystem, affecting hundreds of pages and countless existing touchpoints. The wave symbol, central to their identity, posed a challenge. Ashfall opted for refinement over a complete redesign, adjusting proportions and details while maintaining the essence of the original symbol. This allowed them to transform other visual elements like typography and color without sacrificing brand recognition.
The design process revealed a saturated aesthetic among Web3 brands, characterized by dark backgrounds and neon accents. Ashfall aimed to differentiate Aptos by creating a visual identity that conveyed human warmth and calm while retaining technical credibility. They developed a lighter color palette and chose Season, a typeface that balanced warmth with precision, enabling smooth transitions between weights. This typographic choice supported the brand's narrative of progress and momentum, essential in a blockchain context.
To maintain consistency and flexibility, Ashfall implemented a modular grid system for visual applications. This allowed for various layouts while preserving brand coherence. The website architecture followed Atomic Design principles, enabling Aptos’ content team to create pages independently, aligning with brand standards. Custom illustrations were commissioned to enhance user understanding of complex concepts, ensuring a consistent tone throughout the site. This efficient collaboration between Ashfall and Aptos, facilitated by their parallel structures, allowed for swift decision-making and direct communication, minimizing delays often seen in client-agency relationships.
