OpenAI’s video-generation app, Sora, has seen a sharp decline in downloads and consumer spending after a strong launch. The app quickly rose to the top of the U.S. App Store, hitting 100,000 installs on its first day and surpassing 1 million downloads faster than ChatGPT. However, data from Appfigures reveals a 32% drop in downloads in December and a further 45% decline in January, bringing total installs to 1.2 million. Consumer spending also fell by 32% month-over-month in January, down from a peak of $540,000 in December to $367,000.
Sora allows users to create AI videos, casting themselves and friends as characters. Despite its initial appeal, competition from other AI apps, notably Google’s Gemini and Meta AI’s Vibes, has intensified. Sora has faced challenges with copyright issues, leading to a shift from an opt-out to an opt-in model for intellectual property use. Although a recent deal with Disney allowed the use of its characters, it hasn't translated into a boost in installs or spending. Users have shown reluctance to share their likenesses for AI video creation, contributing to waning interest in the app.
