AWS Lambda now offers improved observability for Kafka event source mappings, allowing users to monitor event polling, scaling, and processing with Amazon CloudWatch Logs and metrics. This enhancement helps troubleshoot issues quickly, reducing operational overhead and mean time to resolution. It's available for both Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka and self-managed Kafka setups.
If you do, here's more
AWS Lambda has introduced enhanced observability for Kafka event source mappings (ESM), integrating Amazon CloudWatch Logs and metrics. This update allows users to monitor the setup, scaling, and processing state of Kafka events more effectively. By enabling these features, customers can quickly identify and address issues related to permissions, misconfigurations, or function errors, which can slow down troubleshooting and increase resolution times.
With this launch, users can access various log levels to get insights ranging from warnings and errors to detailed event processing information. Metrics groups, including EventCount, ErrorCount, and KafkaMetrics, help track different aspects of event processing. These tools are accessible through a dedicated monitoring page in the AWS Console, streamlining the observability process for customers managing data streaming workloads.
The new observability features are available in all AWS Commercial Regions where AWS Lambda's Provisioned mode for Kafka ESM operates. Users can enable logs and metrics through multiple methods, including the AWS Console, AWS CLI, and SDKs. There are costs associated with these logs and metrics based on standard CloudWatch pricing. For further technical details, customers can refer to the Lambda Kafka ESM developer documentation.
