Telegram has launched its decentralized AI compute network, Cocoon, aiming to compete with giants like Amazon and Microsoft. Built on the TON blockchain, Cocoon connects GPU owners who provide computing power and privacy-focused applications. By using this network, GPU providers earn TON tokens, which Telegram claims lowers costs and enhances privacy compared to centralized options. However, the network currently only supports specific Intel processors, raising concerns about its potential for widespread adoption. Pavel Durov, Telegram's CEO, highlighted that Cocoon aims to eliminate the high costs and privacy issues associated with centralized compute providers. He also mentioned that Telegram is a heavy user of AI compute for various features, including translations and voice-to-text. Despite the promising setup, some experts, like Alex Petrov from Hyperfusion, expressed skepticism about the network's viability, pointing out its reliance on a narrow range of Intel hardware. Others argue that decentralized networks can thrive without being tied to specialized technology.
