Gmarket is facing scrutiny after over 60 users reported unauthorized mobile payments made through their accounts. The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) initiated an emergency inspection following these claims. Users experienced losses ranging from 30,000 to 200,000 won, primarily due to mobile gift certificates purchased using credit cards linked to Gmarket's payment service, SmilePay.
Gmarket maintains that the issue is not due to hacking but rather a result of fraudulent payments made with stolen account information. The FSS is working to confirm this explanation. In a related move, the FSS is also inspecting Coupang Pay, the fintech arm of Coupang, amid concerns about a recent massive data breach at the company. This breach reportedly affected nearly 34 million customers, exposing sensitive information like names and addresses. The breach occurred between June and November, but Coupang only acknowledged it last month.
