Google has launched a new feature called Personal Intelligence within its Gemini app, allowing users to connect information from various Google services like Gmail and Google Photos. This tool aims to provide personalized answers by understanding context without needing explicit instructions. Users can expect Gemini to link email threads with relevant videos or find specific images from photo libraries. This feature is currently available for personal accounts, primarily targeting Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Josh Woodward, a vice president at Google Labs, noted that while Gemini can now reason across user data to generate insights, the feature is still in beta and may have limitations. Users might experience issues with timing and nuance, especially on sensitive topics like relationship changes or health. Gemini will not make proactive assumptions about sensitive matters unless prompted by the user. Google clarified that it does not directly train its AI on personal data from Gmail or Google Photos but uses limited information to enhance its functionality. The introduction of Personal Intelligence positions Google to compete against Apple's personal AI system, which integrates apps for tasks like writing and image creation. Apple has announced plans to enhance Siri with Google's AI capabilities in an upcoming update. Google also plans to integrate Personal Intelligence into its search tool's "AI Mode" in the future, although this feature will be disabled by default.
