Wikimedia Foundation marked its 25th anniversary by announcing new partnerships with several major AI companies, including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. These partnerships build on a previous collaboration with Google established in 2022. Wikimedia Enterprise, the foundation's commercial product, facilitates large-scale reuse of Wikipedia content, addressing the growing demand from tech firms to access and utilize this information quickly and efficiently. Other previously mentioned partners such as Ecosia and Pleias were also included in this update.
With these partnerships, Wikimedia aims to create new revenue streams as AI models increasingly use Wikipedia content for generating responses. This initiative comes at a time when Wikipedia ranks among the top 10 most-visited websites globally, with users accessing more than 65 million articles across 300 languages nearly 15 billion times each month. Selena Deckelmann, the foundation's CPO/CTO, emphasized the importance of human-curated knowledge in the age of AI, underscoring Wikimedia's role as a hub for collaborative knowledge.
In addition to the partnerships, Wikimedia launched a birthday campaign featuring a new docuseries showcasing the work of its volunteers and a "25 Years of Wikipedia" time capsule that highlights the platform's history and future. A livestreamed celebration event on January 15 will include guests and entertainment, available across various social media channels. The foundation also announced recent technological upgrades and experiments, reflecting its commitment to evolving and maintaining relevance in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
