NixOS 25.11 “Xantusia” has been officially released, marking a significant update for this Linux distribution. The new version will receive bugfixes and security updates until June 30, 2026. The previous version, 25.05 “Warbler,” is now deprecated and will stop receiving updates after December 31, 2025. The release was driven by a large community effort, with 2,742 contributors making a total of 59,430 commits.
The update includes a substantial overhaul of the package repository, Nixpkgs. There are 7,002 new packages added, 25,252 packages updated, and 6,338 outdated packages removed, which aims to enhance maintainability and security. In terms of configuration, the release introduced 107 new modules and 1,778 configuration options while removing 41 outdated modules and 807 options. The GNOME desktop environment has been updated to version 49 “Brescia,” which drops X11 session support and includes several new features like a revamped video player and document viewer.
C compilers have also seen updates, with LLVM upgraded to version 21, while GCC remains at version 14 and CMake is now at version 4. The release managers, jopejoe1 and Leona Maroni, expressed gratitude to contributors, especially those who assisted with the editorial process, logo design, and infrastructure support. They highlighted the collaborative nature of the release and their eagerness for the upcoming NixOS 26.05 “Yarara.”
