GitHub is delaying the billing change for self-hosted Actions to reassess their approach, responding to user feedback. While they're postponing this change, they will reduce prices for hosted runners by up to 39% starting January 1, 2026. The intended pricing update was initially aimed at aligning the costs of self-hosted and GitHub-hosted runners, but the company recognizes that they didn't adequately involve users in the planning process. They aim to improve GitHub Actions by engaging more with developers and customers moving forward.
The pricing calculator will help users estimate their costs, with 96% of customers expected to see no bill change. Out of the 4% affected, 85% will have lower bills, while the remaining 15% could see a median increase of about $13. GitHub Actions will continue to be free for public repositories, having provided over 11.5 billion minutes of Actions usage in 2025 at no cost, representing around $184 million.
The introduction of a $0.002 per-minute charge for the Actions cloud platform will apply to all workflows, impacting self-hosted runner pricing starting March 1, 2026. GitHub plans to enhance the self-hosted experience by investing in autoscaling for various environments, including Windows. Upcoming features include a new client for building autoscaling solutions without Kubernetes and the return of multi-label support for larger runners. The actions data stream will offer a real-time feed of workflow data, improving observability and troubleshooting capabilities.
