Collins Dictionary has named "vibe coding" as its word of the year for 2025. The term, coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, describes a method of creating apps or websites by providing descriptions to AI instead of writing traditional code. This approach allows individuals without programming skills to develop basic applications by simply instructing the AI with phrases like “make me a program that schedules my weekly meals.” While it makes coding more accessible, it doesn’t eliminate the need for expertise in more complex projects. Users should still expect potential bugs in the output. Alongside "vibe coding," Collins highlighted other words that became prominent in 2025. Among them is "clanker," which describes robots in Star Wars and gained traction on TikTok as people voiced frustrations with AI machines. "Aura farming," referring to actions taken for the sake of appearing cool on camera, and "broligarchy," a term for tech company owners and their political clout, also made the list. The shortlist features additional words such as "biohacking," "coolcation," and "micro-retirement," reflecting contemporary trends and concerns in society.
