The Linux Foundation has launched the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), backed by contributions from Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI. This foundation aims to foster open and transparent development in the field of agentic AI, a technology that allows AI systems to make autonomous decisions and coordinate with each other. The AAIF introduces three key projects: Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), Block’s goose framework, and OpenAI’s AGENTS.md. These projects are designed to create a cohesive ecosystem for developing and integrating AI technologies. MCP has quickly become the standard protocol for connecting AI models with various tools and data sources. In just over a year since its open-source release, it has seen over 10,000 implementations across diverse platforms, including prominent services like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT. Goose, developed by Block, is an open-source framework that combines language models and tools with MCP integration, aiming to provide a reliable environment for building agentic workflows. Meanwhile, AGENTS.md offers a standardized approach for AI coding agents, ensuring consistent guidance across numerous open-source projects, having already been adopted by over 60,000 projects. The AAIF's structure supports open governance, allowing these projects to grow while remaining community-driven. Major tech companies such as Amazon Web Services, Google, and Microsoft are among its platinum members, indicating strong industry support for this initiative. The foundation also aims to address the growing need for trust and safety in AI development, emphasizing open standards and collaboration as essential to its success.
