Stack Overflow is shifting its focus to become a key player in enterprise AI, as announced during Microsoft’s Ignite conference. The company introduced Stack Internal, an enterprise version of its traditional forum, designed to make human expertise accessible to AI systems. This product incorporates enhanced security features and controls, aligning with the needs of businesses. The tools are specifically crafted to support internal AI agents, utilizing the model context protocol tailored for Stack Overflow. The impetus for this new direction came from existing enterprise clients using Stack Overflow’s API for AI training. The company has also formed content agreements with several AI labs, allowing them to train models on public data from Stack Overflow for a flat fee. CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar indicated these arrangements bear resemblance to successful deals made by Reddit, which have generated over $200 million. A notable feature of Stack Internal is its metadata layer that accompanies Q&A pairs, providing insights like responder identity and answer reliability scores, which help AI systems assess trustworthiness. While Stack Overflow isn’t developing the AI agents themselves, the potential for these tools is significant. CTO Jody Bailey emphasized the importance of a writing function, which would enable AI agents to generate their own queries when faced with gaps in knowledge. This functionality aims to simplify the process for developers, making it easier to capture and utilize specific business information. Bailey's vision for the future includes leveraging a knowledge graph to connect related concepts, reducing the manual effort required from users.
