Delta Dental of Virginia (DDVA) has informed approximately 146,000 individuals that their personal and health information was compromised in a data breach earlier this year. The breach stemmed from the compromise of an email account, where a threat actor accessed emails and attachments containing sensitive patient data. The investigation revealed that the stolen information includes names, Social Security numbers, government-issued ID numbers, and protected health information.
DDVA's analysis, conducted with independent cybersecurity experts, determined that 145,918 individuals were affected. The organization has stated that there is no evidence indicating the misuse of the compromised information. To mitigate the impact, DDVA is offering 12 months of free identity protection and credit monitoring services to those whose Social Security numbers or driverβs license information were involved.
As a not-for-profit based in Roanoke, Virginia, DDVA provides dental and vision plans and operates a foundation aimed at improving oral health statewide. The incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in email security and the potential risks associated with compromised accounts in healthcare settings.
