In April 2025, a significant data breach at the Pierce County Library System (PCLS) compromised personal information of over 340,000 individuals, including library patrons, employees, and their family members. Hackers accessed PCLS’s network from April 15 to April 21, extracting sensitive data. The breach affected patrons' names and birth dates, while employees and their families faced a more serious threat, with stolen information including Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, passport details, financial data, and health insurance information.
PCLS has initiated an investigation to assess the breach’s extent and is notifying those impacted. Each affected individual will receive 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity protection services. Despite the scale of the breach, PCLS has not disclosed any details about the hackers behind the incident. No known ransomware groups have claimed responsibility thus far, leaving questions about the motivations and identities of the attackers.
