Poland's parliament recently failed to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a significant crypto bill, making the country the only holdout in the EU regarding the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. The vote in the Sejm fell short by 18 votes, preventing Prime Minister Donald Tusk's coalition from aligning Poland's crypto regulations with those of other EU nations. Nawrocki criticized the bill for being overly complex compared to other EU implementations and expressed concerns that it could drive domestic crypto firms abroad.
Tusk had argued for the bill's urgency, citing national security risks from Russian intelligence and organized crime using digital assets. The political divide has become stark, with Nawrocki's nationalist supporters clashing with Tusk's pro-EU coalition. Industry reactions to the veto were mixed; some groups viewed the bill as a step toward regulatory clarity, while others warned that it could impede blockchain development in Poland.
Despite the regulatory uncertainty, Poland's crypto market is thriving, ranking eighth in Europe for total cryptocurrency value received between July 2024 and June 2025. More than 7.9 million Poles, about one-fifth of the population, are involved in cryptocurrency transactions. As other EU countries like Germany and Malta move forward with MiCA implementation, Poland's standoff leaves it isolated in the growing crypto ecosystem. Meanwhile, Italy has issued reminders for compliance with MiCA regulations, reflecting a broader push for regulatory coherence across the EU, which may eventually diminish the role of individual member states' rules.
