OpenAI is testing a group chat feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to collaborate with friends and family while integrating AI assistance. Currently available in select regions, this feature aims to enhance user engagement by merging social interactions with AI capabilities. Concerns about privacy and user experience remain key challenges.

Launching a new chat app is increasingly difficult due to user loyalty to established platforms. In 2025, most users have already chosen their preferred apps, making it a challenge to shift not just individual users but their entire social circles. OpenAI is attempting to change this with a new group chat feature for ChatGPT, currently being tested in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. This feature allows users to collaborate with friends, family, or coworkers in shared conversations while maintaining privacy—personal ChatGPT memories won't be shared in group chats.
ChatGPT already operates as a chat app with a significant user base, nearing a billion users, which gives it an edge. However, integrating social interactions could alienate some users who are accustomed to the AI-focused experience. The challenge lies in creating a user-friendly interface that doesn’t convolute ChatGPT's original purpose. The group messaging feature aligns with previous user feedback regarding OpenAI's other app, Sora, which lacked this functionality. Changes in Sora now allow users to share content with specific groups rather than a public feed.
Privacy and safety concerns will be significant hurdles. OpenAI has implemented measures like separating group chats from private ones and providing granular controls over how personal data is used. Notably, if underage users join, the system automatically limits their exposure to sensitive content. ChatGPT will also have new social behaviors, responding contextually during conversations. This raises questions about user comfort with an AI presence in chats, but it also opens up possibilities for engaging interactions. The move to combine AI capabilities with social features positions OpenAI to compete directly with established players like Meta, which is also investing in AI for its chat services.
