Mentimeter has launched a new hand-drawn illustration system by Dutch designer Loek Vugs as part of its rebranding effort. The illustrations are designed to complement Mentimeter's bold new identity while adding a human touch. Vugs aimed for a style that feels expressive yet remains clear and minimalistic. The single-color illustrations capture a sense of life and character, avoiding overly exaggerated features while maintaining realistic movement.
The process began with exploratory sketches, where Vugs experimented with different scales and character behaviors. Early discussions with art directors Mikael Lundin and Peter Viksten fostered a collaborative environment, allowing Vugs to refine the system's rules. He focused on creating characters that felt spontaneous yet grounded. The illustrations are characterized by their sketchbook quality—wobbly strokes that lend an informal feel while effectively communicating emotions without facial expressions.
The system includes two main types of illustrations: conceptual spot illustrations and a full icon set. Designing icons required a different approach, emphasizing clarity and balance, while spot illustrations embraced looser concepts. One standout idea was the half-horse costume to represent "error," which emerged almost accidentally during the sketching phase. Vugs also explored abstract concepts like "complexity" and "celebration" through quick drawings inspired by various associations. His background in animation informed the design, ensuring that the illustrations could be easily animated without losing their simplicity. As Mentimeter rolls out these new elements, Vugs looks forward to seeing how they enhance user interaction on the platform.
