Fintech company Marquis is seeking compensation from its firewall provider, SonicWall, after a data breach that exposed personal and financial information of its customers. In a memo to customers, Marquis connected the breach to an earlier incident at SonicWall, which compromised critical security information. According to Marquis, hackers used information obtained during SonicWall’s breach to launch a ransomware attack against its systems in August 2025. The company acknowledged storing a backup of its firewall configuration in SonicWall’s cloud, which contributed to the vulnerability.
Marquis has initiated a third-party investigation that confirmed the hackers accessed firewall information during the SonicWall incident. Despite SonicWall's initial claims that only a small percentage of its customers were affected, the company later admitted that all customers using its cloud backup service had their firewall configuration data accessed. Marquis has begun notifying hundreds of thousands of individuals whose data was stolen, including sensitive information such as Social Security numbers.
SonicWall has asked Marquis for evidence to support its claims and maintains that it has not established a direct link between its breach and ongoing ransomware attacks. Marquis has also examined whether a patch it failed to implement at the time of the incident could have contributed to the breach but found that the vulnerability was not exploitable in a way that led to the data theft. The total number of individuals affected by the breach is still unclear, and further notifications to state attorneys general may increase this figure.
