Fastly has rolled out a significant update to its DDoS Protection service, introducing the Adaptive Threat Engine. This update builds on their existing automated protection, which has been adopted by major brands since its launch last October. The new engine combines the original Attribute Unmasking technique with enhanced capabilities, aiming to improve both mitigation accuracy and response times as the holiday season approaches.
The Adaptive Threat Engine now features a third control for increased accuracy. It continuously baselines both overall traffic and its characteristics, using over ten behavioral and client-based traits. When abnormal traffic patterns are detected, the engine can identify potential attacks more reliably. New rules are cross-referenced against recent legitimate traffic samples before any mitigation occurs, further minimizing the risk of affecting genuine users.
In terms of performance, Fastly has drastically cut the mean time to resolution (MTTR) for DDoS attacks. Recent estimates show that attacks can now be mitigated 72% faster compared to just a few months ago. This improvement comes from a reduced detection refresh rate and the use of HTTP Long Polling for real-time updates. These enhancements allow Fastly to respond quickly to bursty attacks, reducing their impact on businesses during peak shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
