Apple is delaying the launch of the next-generation iPhone Air, originally set to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. The decision comes after disappointing sales of the current iPhone Air, which launched in September 2025. Reports indicate that production has been drastically cut, with Apple’s main supplier, Foxconn, dismantling all but one and a half production lines. Luxshare, another key supplier, halted production altogether at the end of October. The iPhone Air was intended to attract buyers with its sleek design, the thinnest iPhone at just 5.6mm, and a starting price of $999. However, the phone's smaller battery and single-lens camera failed to justify this cost for many consumers. It competes closely with the iPhone 17 Pro, which offers a triple-lens camera and superior battery life for just $100 more. Apple has struggled to find a successful fourth model to complement its standard and Pro versions, having previously tried the iPhone mini and Plus models, both of which did not resonate with consumers. Looking ahead, Apple is planning a staggered launch for the iPhone 18 series, with the Pro models and a foldable version expected in fall 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e will arrive in early 2027. There's speculation that a new version of the iPhone Air might be released alongside the iPhone 18 in spring 2027. Apple is also exploring a second-generation Air with improvements like a lighter build and enhanced battery capacity, although the design could change based on market feedback.
