His approach emphasized empathy, focusing on user feelings rather than just features. This marked a departure from the utilitarian design principle of "form follows function," leading to the idea that "form follows emotion," a notion that continues to resonate in modern design. Research supports the importance of emotional design. Studies show that aesthetics can significantly impact users' perception of usability. For instance, a 1990s study on ATM controls revealed that more visually appealing designs were perceived as easier to use, highlighting how first impressions matter. Emotional responses can be categorized into three levels: visceral, behavioral, and reflective. Each level contributes to how users engage with products, emphasizing that memorable experiences stem from catering to users' emotional journeys. Despite advancements in design tools, many digital experiences still feel impersonal. Users are more loyal to brands that foster emotional connections, while frustrating interfaces can damage reputations. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) presents new opportunities for emotional design. AI can track user behaviors and preferences to create personalized experiences. For example, a fitness app could adapt its encouragement based on a user’s emotional state. However, while AI can enhance empathy, it lacks the depth of human understanding. Designers must ensure a seamless integration of AI with human touch, creating adaptive experiences that respond to users in real time.
