Anthropic is donating the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the Agentic AI Foundation, a new initiative under the Linux Foundation, co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, with backing from major tech companies like Google and Microsoft. MCP, introduced a year ago, is an open standard designed to connect AI applications with external systems. Its adoption has grown significantly, with over 10,000 active public MCP servers. Itβs integrated into popular platforms like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and major cloud providers now support its deployment.
The donation aims to ensure MCP remains open-source and community-driven. Alongside MCP, projects like goose by Block and AGENTS.md by OpenAI will also be part of the AAIF, promoting collaboration in the agentic AI space. The governance of MCP will continue to prioritize community input. With recent enhancements, including over 75 connectors and new features in its latest specification, MCP is poised for further growth. The Linux Foundation's experience in managing open-source projects adds credibility to the AAIF's goal of fostering transparent and collaborative development in AI.
