Apple has introduced its first in-house Wi-Fi chip, the N1, with the latest iPhone 17 series. This chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread for smart home devices, replacing older Broadcom chips. Apple claims the N1 enhances connectivity for features like AirPlay and AirDrop, but specific performance metrics were initially unclear.
Ookla, the company behind SpeedTest, analyzed data from iPhone 17 users over five weeks. Their findings show that the N1 chip outperforms the iPhone 16 in download and upload speeds across various regions and performance percentiles. The median download speed for the iPhone 17 is 329.56 Mbps, a significant increase from the iPhone 16's 236.46 Mbps. Upload speeds also improved from 73.68 Mbps to 103.26 Mbps. Notably, the N1 excels in low-performance scenarios, lifting the minimum speeds more effectively than achieving top-tier speeds.
Despite these improvements, the iPhone 17 doesn’t lead the global performance charts. The Pixel 10 Pro series offers slightly better download speeds, while the Xiaomi 15T Pro outperforms the iPhone in upload speeds. Apple’s N1 chip represents a step forward, but it faces stiff competition from other manufacturers in the market.
