The research highlights how these domains are monetized by parking companies, which sell the clicks to advertisers, often resulting in a chain of redirects before users hit malicious sites.
Infoblox identified that users on residential IP addresses are more vulnerable. For instance, a user mistyping Scotiabank.com would reach a scam site unless they were using a VPN. The report also notes a domain owner managing nearly 3,000 typosquatting domains, including gmai[.]com, which routes emails to scammers instead of returning them to the sender. This highlights a broader strategy where malicious actors exploit common errors and misconfigurations to target users visiting well-known sites.
The research also reveals that even attempts to access government websites can lead to harmful redirects. An Infoblox researcher trying to report a crime to the FBI accidentally visited a similar-looking domain and encountered a scam page. The report emphasizes that the malicious activity isn't directly linked to the parking companies or advertising platforms, but rather to the traffic resold through affiliate networks. Moreover, changes in Google's ad policies may have worsened the situation by allowing ads on parked pages, increasing the risk for users navigating these domains.
