Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist and a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, plans to leave the company to launch his own startup. According to a Financial Times report, he is already seeking funding for a venture focused on world models—AI systems that simulate environments and predict outcomes. This move comes as Meta grapples with competition from rivals like OpenAI and Google, prompting a significant shift in its AI strategy. Meta has been restructuring its AI organization by hiring over 50 engineers and researchers from competitors, leading to the creation of the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). The changes have reportedly caused confusion and frustration among new hires, who are struggling with the company's bureaucracy. LeCun's work at Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division has received less attention as CEO Mark Zuckerberg pushes for immediate results following the underwhelming performance of the Llama 4 AI model. LeCun has been critical of current AI trends, especially the hype surrounding large language models (LLMs). He believes that before addressing complex AI control issues, there needs to be a clearer understanding of designing systems that outperform basic intelligence, like that of a house cat. Meta has not publicly responded to inquiries about LeCun's departure.
