PNC Bank has launched direct bitcoin trading for its high-net-worth clients, marking a significant move among major U.S. banks. This service allows clients to buy and sell bitcoin through their existing investment accounts, integrating Coinbase’s trading and custody infrastructure into PNC’s platform. Clients can fund purchases using cash from their PNC accounts, with crypto investments displayed alongside traditional assets. This rollout follows a partnership announced in July 2025.
The bank's executives emphasize that this initiative is aimed at retaining client relationships and preventing them from turning to third-party apps or exchanges. CEO Bill Demchak and CIO Amanda Agati highlighted a growing client expectation for banks to facilitate understanding and access to crypto, even if they're not heavily investing yet. Previously, PNC's offerings were limited to passive ETFs related to bitcoin and ether, but plans are in place to expand direct trading services to institutional clients and nonprofits early next year.
Coinbase's CEO Brian Armstrong expressed enthusiasm for more banks adopting crypto services through this partnership. PNC’s move reflects a broader trend in the financial sector, with firms like Bank of America and Vanguard also increasing their crypto offerings. Bank of America is set to establish formal crypto allocation ranges and research coverage for spot bitcoin ETFs, while Vanguard recently allowed trading of funds that primarily hold crypto assets, indicating a shift in institutional attitudes toward digital currencies.
