Freedom Mobile, a major wireless carrier in Canada, recently reported a data breach involving its customer account management platform. The breach occurred on October 23 when attackers accessed the system using the account of a subcontractor. While Freedom hasnβt disclosed the exact number of affected customers, the compromised data includes names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, and account numbers.
The company took swift action after detecting the breach, blocking the suspicious accounts and IP addresses involved. Despite the incident, Freedom Mobile stated that its network and operations remained unaffected, clarifying that this was not a ransomware attack. They have urged customers to be cautious of unsolicited messages asking for personal information and to monitor their accounts for any unusual activity.
This isnβt the first time Freedom Mobile has faced a data breach. In May 2019, a third-party vendor left a customer support database unsecured, impacting around 15,000 customers. With the latest breach, the company continues to grapple with challenges surrounding data security and customer trust in an increasingly digital landscape.
