Cloudflare's recently released Radar Year in Review for 2025 indicates a substantial 19% growth in global internet traffic, with Googlebot continuing its reign as the leading web crawler. The report shows that Googlebot accounted for over 28% of verified bot traffic, while other Google services, like AdsBot and Image Proxy, contributed to the company's overall dominance. AI platforms are crawling content aggressively, but this isn't translating into significant traffic back to source sites, with crawl-to-refer ratios for major AI crawlers like Anthropic and OpenAI reaching alarming highs of 500,000:1 and 3,700:1, respectively.
The analysis also highlights the growing adoption of post-quantum encryption, which now protects half of human-generated web traffic. This is a marked increase from 29% at the start of 2025, demonstrating a response to evolving security threats. JavaScript remains the dominant technology for web development, with jQuery and React leading the way. For API requests, Go-based clients have surged to 20% of automated requests, nearly doubling from the previous year, while Python and Node.js follow closely behind.
Outages were a mix of planned shutdowns for exam security and incidents linked to civil unrest or infrastructure damage. The report notes that almost half of the outages in 2025 were due to these planned events. DDoS attacks continue to escalate in frequency and intensity, with record-breaking volumetric attacks now common. The overall picture painted by Cloudflare suggests a web increasingly populated by bots and vulnerable to various threats, reflecting ongoing challenges in internet stability and security.
