Meta plans to start grading employee performance based on their AI skills beginning in 2026. The company is shifting to an AI-native culture and will link performance evaluations to what they call "AI-driven impact." Janelle Gale, Meta's head of people, communicated this change in an internal memo. While the performance metrics related to AI usage won't be part of the 2025 reviews, employees are encouraged to highlight their AI successes in self-reviews.
The move aligns with a broader trend among major tech companies like Microsoft and Google, which are pushing employees to integrate AI into their daily tasks. Both companies have emphasized that using AI is essential for staying competitive. Earlier in the year, Meta also modified its hiring process to allow AI tools in coding interviews and introduced an internal game called "Level Up" to encourage AI adoption among employees.
Meta is also enhancing the performance review process with an "AI Performance Assistant" to help employees draft their reviews. This tool will be available for the upcoming review period starting December 8. Employees can utilize Metaβs internal AI assistant, Metamate, and Google's Gemini for crafting their performance content. This signals a significant shift in how companies are approaching employee productivity and performance in the age of AI.
