Wikipedia has unified its mobile and desktop domains, eliminating the need for a redirect that previously directed mobile users to a separate URL for mobile content. This change, completed on October 8, 2025, resulted in a 20% improvement in mobile response times. The decision to move away from the mobile subdomain stemmed from outdated practices dating back to 2008 when mobile domains were common. As technology advanced, maintaining a separate mobile site became unnecessary and even detrimental to site performance and SEO.
Before this unification, Google had shifted its indexing approach, making mobile redirects problematic. The new mobile-first crawler linked directly to the main domain, causing a regression in response times for mobile users. The previous mobile domain setup had also led to a significant number of pages being delisted from Google’s index. After disabling the mobile redirect on Wikimedia Commons, the site saw a 100% increase in Google referrals, demonstrating the impact of this change. The overall crawl budget was better utilized, allowing for more pages to be indexed.
The update also improved user experience when sharing links. Previously, links shared from mobile devices would direct users to the mobile site, even on desktop. The unified domain now ensures that all links point to the appropriate version of the site, regardless of the device used. This addresses long-standing user experience issues and simplifies how links are shared across platforms.
On the infrastructure side, the change reduced the load on Wikimedia’s CDN. The previous system required frequent purges of cached content, which was taxing on the system. By streamlining this process through a unified domain, Wikimedia aims to create a more sustainable infrastructure moving forward.
