Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, is pushing for the development of more effective decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) that go beyond the current model of token-holder voting. He believes that while these DAOs have functional aspects, they often mirror the inefficiencies found in traditional political systems, leading to skepticism within the community. Buterin emphasizes the need for improved designs in DAOs, particularly in areas such as decentralized finance (DeFi), where current oracle systems are inadequate. He pointed out that token-based oracles can't secure assets effectively due to their vulnerability to attacks that can be cheaper than their market cap.
Buterin identified key challenges that hinder DAO progress: privacy and decision fatigue. He argues that without privacy, governance becomes a superficial social game, discouraging genuine participation. Over time, the excitement around decision-making wanes as participants grow tired of constant voting. To tackle these issues, he suggests leveraging zero-knowledge proofs for privacy and AI to alleviate decision fatigue, but emphasizes that AI should complement human judgment, not replace it.
A communication layer within DAOs is also essential, according to Buterin. He believes that projects needing new oracles and governance structures should prioritize these elements, dedicating significant resources to enhance communication among members. This approach is vital for ensuring the robustness of the Ethereum ecosystem as it evolves.
