Perplexity has launched an AI shopping feature aimed at improving the online shopping experience as the holiday season approaches. This tool allows US users to input specific product requests, similar to ChatGPT’s shopping capabilities. Users can refine their searches with follow-up questions, and Perplexity provides product recommendations displayed as cards with specifications and reviews. Products can be purchased directly through Perplexity, utilizing merchants that accept PayPal.
The AI personal shopper remembers user preferences, which enhances future recommendations. For example, if a user requests a jacket for a ferry commute, the assistant will consider this when suggesting boots later. The feature is currently available on desktop and web, with mobile access expected soon for iOS and Android users. Perplexity has partnered with PayPal for an “Instant Buy” service, allowing merchants to maintain customer relationships similar to their own websites.
In its announcement, Perplexity criticized traditional search methods for lacking in exploration and accused some editorial outlets of prioritizing affiliate revenue over genuine product recommendations. The company emphasizes a more personalized shopping experience, where its AI understands user intent and preferences, striving to make online shopping more enjoyable rather than just efficient.
