Luma AI has raised $900 million in funding, led by the Saudi-backed firm HUMAIN. This round boosts Luma's total funding to over $1 billion and gives the company an estimated valuation of around $4 billion. The capital will enhance Luma’s development of large-scale World Models, crucial for its goal to create multimodal general intelligence capable of understanding and interacting with the physical world. In addition to this funding, Luma will also be one of the first users of Project Halo, a two-gigawatt AI supercluster being built in Saudi Arabia, which aims to be one of the largest AI compute deployments.
Luma’s CEO Amit Jain emphasized the need for vast computing resources to process enormous datasets, claiming they will work with information equivalent to the collective digital memory of humanity. The partnership with HUMAIN, along with investments from AMD and Amazon, highlights a strategic move towards achieving advanced AI capabilities. The planned supercluster will allow Luma to train on datasets up to 10,000 times larger than those used by current language models, facilitating real-time global inference for its AI applications.
This collaboration isn’t new; Luma and HUMAIN have previously partnered on projects related to interactive storytelling and gaming. HUMAIN’s CEO Tareq Amin expressed confidence in Luma’s technical ambitions and ability to transform research breakthroughs into viable products. While there’s no set timeline for the completion of Project Halo, the scale of this venture underscores the increasing investment in AI infrastructure, particularly in the Middle East, as companies look to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence.
