OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.2, its latest AI model for ChatGPT, introduced in three versions: Instant, Thinking, and Pro. This release comes after CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” memo urging the team to prioritize improvements to ChatGPT due to competitive pressure from Google's Gemini 3 model. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief product officer, emphasized that GPT-5.2 aims to enhance economic value by improving tasks like spreadsheet creation, presentation building, coding, image perception, and managing complex projects.
The new model boasts a 400,000-token context window, allowing it to analyze numerous documents simultaneously, with a knowledge cutoff set for August 31, 2025. This update is available to paid ChatGPT subscribers and developers through API access, priced at $1.75 per million input tokens—40% higher than the previous GPT-5.1 model, which will still be accessible for three months under a legacy options menu.
OpenAI's recent challenges reflect a shift in the AI landscape. The company’s internal memo highlighted urgency after Google's Gemini 3 surpassed it in several benchmarks and gained significant market share. OpenAI has made substantial investments, committing $1.4 trillion for AI infrastructure over the next few years, a strategy rooted in its past technological lead. Currently, Google’s Gemini app boasts over 650 million monthly active users, while OpenAI reports 800 million weekly active users for ChatGPT.
