If you do, here's more
YouTube and Facebook hold the top spots as the most widely used social media platforms in the U.S., with 84% and 71% of adults reporting usage, respectively. Instagram follows, with half of adults using it. Other platforms like TikTok and WhatsApp have lower usage rates at 37% and 32%. New platforms like Threads, Bluesky, and Truth Social have only about 10% adoption among users. This data comes from a Pew Research Center survey of over 5,000 U.S. adults conducted in early 2025.
In recent years, TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reddit have seen increased usage. TikTok's adult user base has grown from 21% in 2021 to 37% now. Instagram is stable at 50% usage, while WhatsApp and Reddit have also seen rises. Age significantly influences platform choice; younger adults, particularly those under 30, dominate Instagram and TikTok usage. In contrast, Facebook attracts more users aged 30-49, with 80% of that group reporting usage.
Gender, race, education, and political affiliation also impact social media engagement. Women are more likely to use Instagram and TikTok, while men favor Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). White adults lag behind Black and Hispanic adults in using platforms like Instagram. Higher education correlates with greater usage of Reddit and WhatsApp, while TikTok appeals more to those with less formal education. Politically, Democrats lean toward WhatsApp and TikTok, whereas Republicans show a preference for X and Truth Social. Daily usage reveals that about half of all adults visit Facebook and YouTube daily, with young adults particularly active on TikTok, while older users engage more with Facebook.
