Instagram has launched a new tool called “Your Algorithm” in the U.S., which gives users insight into how their Reels recommendations are formed. By tapping an icon while watching a Reel, users can access a personalized summary of their interests based on their activity. The tool highlights topics like creativity, sports, fitness, and skateboarding, all generated by AI analysis of user behavior. Users can also share their algorithm summary to their Story, creating a mini “Reels Wrapped” experience.
The tool allows for greater customization. Users can mark topics they want to see more or less of and can even add new interests if they don't see something they care about. This direct influence means that the Reels feed will adjust based on individual preferences. Instagram is positioning this feature as a step toward greater transparency and control over content, addressing a growing demand from users for more input into what they see.
In comparison, TikTok has a similar feature called “Manage Topics,” but it only provides broad categories without the same level of personalization. Instagram’s approach allows for a more tailored experience, potentially benefiting content creators by aligning their work with specific niche interests. Instagram plans to expand “Your Algorithm” beyond Reels to personalize the Explore feed and other areas of the app in the future.
