The team at Octopus has integrated Argo CD into their deployment process, responding to customer demand for a GitOps approach combined with Octopus's orchestration capabilities. After three days of brainstorming in Auckland, they identified key features to include in the Early Access release for Cloud customers. The initial offering enables users to update container images, create and update manifests from templates, commit changes directly to Git or create pull requests, and connect to existing Argo CD instances via a gateway. Users can also monitor application health through a live status page.
At KubeCon London, the team gathered feedback on early prototypes and explored user preferences regarding the integration of Argo CD with Octopus. Key design decisions included simplifying the setup process for Argo CD steps, allowing users to easily register existing Argo CD instances, and generating annotations to map Argo applications to Octopus projects and environments. This Git-centric approach aims to balance flexibility with simplicity but poses challenges due to the diverse use cases supported by open-source tools.
The integration also enhances observability by displaying the status of Argo applications on the live status page, with plans to expand this feature to include events and logs. Future updates promise more capabilities, and the team encourages users to share feedback and use cases to refine the offering. The new features are currently accessible to all Cloud customers, allowing them to leverage the advantages of GitOps within the Octopus deployment framework.
