Apple plans to revamp Siri into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This new Siri, codenamed “Campos,” will support both voice and text interactions and is expected to be a highlight of Apple’s WWDC presentation in June. Previously, Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi expressed reluctance to turn Siri into a chatbot, preferring AI features that are seamlessly integrated into the user experience. However, changing market dynamics and competition from successful AI chatbots appear to have influenced Apple's strategy. Apple has faced criticism for falling behind in AI development. The company has postponed plans for a more personalized Siri multiple times and spent last year exploring partnerships with various AI firms. It tested technologies from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic but ultimately decided to partner with Google’s Gemini for its AI capabilities. This shift suggests that Apple is feeling pressure not only from competitors in the software arena but also from potential hardware moves by OpenAI, led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
