Google has rolled out new shopping technology that allows users to buy products directly through an AI chatbot. Central to this initiative is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), developed in collaboration with major retailers like Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. This new standard enables users to make purchases during conversations with AI agents. For instance, if you ask an AI for recommendations on carry-on suitcases, you can click on a product and complete the purchase without leaving the chat interface.
More than 20 companies have backed the UCP, including American Express, Best Buy, Macyβs, and Visa. For payments, Google Pay will be supported, with shipping details sourced from Google Wallet. PayPal is expected to join the platform soon. In addition to the UCP, Google is launching the Business Agent feature, which acts as a virtual sales assistant. This tool will answer product inquiries in a brandβs distinctive voice. For example, when searching for Reebok sneakers, the Business Agent can provide tailored assistance, allowing users to finalize purchases in the same conversation.
Google is also introducing Direct Offers, a new ad format that presents exclusive discounts to users searching for products in AI mode. This feature aims to incentivize users to engage more with the AI shopping experience by providing immediate savings. The combination of these tools positions Google as a significant player in the evolving landscape of online shopping, creating a more integrated and efficient way for consumers to shop.
