Over 149 million stolen usernames and passwords were discovered online, affecting platforms like TikTok, Netflix, and several financial services. The data leak, found by cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler, highlights the risks of infostealer malware and the importance of password security. It took a month to take the exposed database offline, raising concerns about the potential for automated attacks.

Over 149 million stolen usernames and passwords for popular platforms like TikTok, Netflix, and Roblox were exposed online without any security measures for weeks. Cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler found a massive 96 GB database that was not static but actively growing, making it a treasure trove for hackers. The leak included 17 million Facebook logins, 3.4 million Netflix credentials, and even 420,000 Binance crypto accounts. Alarmingly, it also contained login details for government domains, which could allow unauthorized access to secure networks.
The likely source of this data breach is infostealer malware, which records everything typed on infected devices. This particular operation showed a higher level of organization than past leaks, employing a unique system to sort data by device and website. Each entry had a distinct fingerprint to avoid duplicates, complicating efforts to trace the source. Morey Haber from BeyondTrust emphasized the importance of using unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and monitoring for exposed credentials on the dark web.
Fowler faced significant challenges in getting the hosting provider to act, taking a month to finally shut down the server. The exposure of exact login web addresses made it easier for criminals to automate attacks, and the risk to users is substantial. To protect themselves, individuals should use password managers, enable two-factor authentication, and keep their operating systems updated to defend against malware.
