John Giannandrea is retiring from his role as senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy at Apple. He will serve as an advisor until his retirement in spring 2026. Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 and has been instrumental in shaping the company’s AI strategy and building a strong team responsible for key areas like Apple Foundation Models and AI Infrastructure. His departure opens the way for Amar Subramanya, a seasoned AI researcher, to step in as vice president of AI, reporting to Craig Federighi.
Subramanya comes to Apple from Microsoft, where he was corporate vice president of AI, and has a history at Google, leading engineering for the Gemini Assistant. His expertise will be critical as he leads efforts in Apple Foundation Models, ML research, and AI Safety and Evaluation. Federighi, who oversees AI efforts at Apple, will expand his leadership team with Subramanya’s joining. The restructuring aims to align Giannandrea’s former organization with other groups, now under Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue.
Tim Cook acknowledged Giannandrea's contributions to Apple’s AI initiatives and expressed optimism about Subramanya’s role in advancing the company’s innovation in artificial intelligence. The leadership changes are positioned to enhance Apple’s ability to deliver more personalized and effective AI experiences, including improvements to Siri expected next year.
