Users can generate character cameos using their likeness or create them based on other subjects like pets and toys. The update includes a selection of pre-made characters for users to incorporate into their videos. Each character comes with customizable permissions. Users can choose to keep their avatars private, share them with select followers, or make them accessible to everyone on Sora. While OpenAI has indicated that users can create characters based on original personas, it remains unclear whether the app will allow uploads of AI-generated fictional characters or how it will differentiate these from real individuals. This uncertainty arises amid a trademark infringement lawsuit from the celebrity video platform Cameo, which claims OpenAI's use of “cameo” violates its trademarks. To encourage engagement with these new features, OpenAI has temporarily removed the invitation requirement for users in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea, allowing anyone in those regions to sign up for the app without a code. This opens the door for a broader user base to explore Sora's capabilities and participate in its community-driven content.
