Apple is reportedly in the early stages of developing an OLED iMac, following its transition to OLED displays in the Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad. The company has reached out to display partners Samsung and LG to gather information on how they can meet the specifications for this new iMac. The requested specs include a 24-inch display, 600 nits of brightness, and a pixel density of 218 PPI. This brightness would make the new iMac 20% brighter than the current 24-inch model, while maintaining the same resolution. However, there are significant hurdles. The development timeline suggests that the OLED iMac won't be ready until 2027 or 2028, with the launch likely pushed even further out. Additionally, Apple’s desire for a larger 30- to 32-inch iMac may be thwarted by current limitations in OLED technology. The RGB OLED method Apple prefers cannot yet reliably produce larger panels, which is why the company is prioritizing the MacBook Pro over the iMac for its OLED rollout. This situation highlights the challenges in scaling OLED technology for larger displays, slowing down Apple's plans for a larger iMac.
