Reddit is implementing new moderation rules that will limit how many subreddits users can oversee. Starting December 1, moderators who currently manage five or more subreddits with at least 100,000 monthly visitors will be unable to accept new moderator invitations for additional subreddits meeting that threshold. By March 31, Reddit expects these moderators to comply with the new restrictions, which aim to foster diverse perspectives within its communities.
Reddit claims only 0.1 percent of active moderators will be impacted by these changes. However, many moderators have expressed concerns about how this will affect their ability to manage communities. Reddit's rationale, articulated by a representative known as Go_JasonWaterfalls, emphasizes the importance of unique mod teams for maintaining the distinctiveness of its communities. Alongside these moderation limits, Reddit will also stop displaying subscriber counts for subreddits, shifting to a metric based on unique visitors over the previous week.
Affected moderators have options: they can apply for exemptions, step down to gain "Alumni status" without mod privileges, or take on an advisory role with read-only permissions. These measures reflect Reddit's ongoing efforts to restructure its moderation system while addressing the need for a more diverse range of voices in subreddit management.
