Google is rolling out AI image verification in its Gemini app, leveraging its SynthID digital watermarking technology. This feature allows users to easily check if an image was generated or edited by Google AI. Since the launch of SynthID in 2023, over 20 billion pieces of AI-generated content have been watermarked. Users can upload an image and inquire whether it was created by Google AI, prompting Gemini to check the SynthID watermark and provide context about the image.
Looking ahead, Google plans to expand this verification capability beyond images to include video and audio formats. They are also collaborating with industry partners to enhance content transparency through the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). Starting this week, images generated by Nano Banana Pro in the Gemini app, Vertex AI, and Google Ads will feature C2PA metadata, which adds another layer of transparency regarding content creation. Eventually, Google aims to support C2PA content credentials, allowing users to trace the origins of content generated by external models and products.
