Global Internet traffic grew by 19% in 2025, with notable increases starting in August. Starlink's traffic doubled, expanding to over 20 new countries. Googlebot continued to dominate the traffic landscape, driving a large portion of requests for search indexing and AI training. Post-quantum encryption became more prevalent, with 52% of human-generated web traffic now encrypted.
In the AI sector, Googlebot's crawl volume outpaced other AI bots, with a sharp increase in AI-related user actions, up 15 times compared to previous years. Metaβs llama-3-8b-instruct model emerged as the most popular for generating text. iOS devices made up 35% of mobile traffic globally. The adoption of HTTP/3 and HTTP/2 showed slight increases, while JavaScript libraries remained vital for web development. Google maintained its status as the leading search engine, while Chrome remained the top browser except on iOS, where Safari led.
Connectivity issues were prominent, with nearly half of major Internet outages attributed to government actions. In terms of security, 6% of global traffic was flagged as potentially malicious, with the U.S. accounting for 40% of bot traffic. Organizations in the "People and Society" sector faced the most attacks. The report noted that hyper-volumetric DDoS attack sizes increased significantly, and over 5% of analyzed emails were found to be malicious. Countries like Botswana experienced the highest traffic growth, peaking at 298% above baseline in November.
