Jump Crypto's new client, Firedancer, has launched on the Solana mainnet after three years of development. This implementation aims to enhance the network's resilience by diversifying the software clients used by validators. Historically, Solana relied heavily on two main clients, Agave and Agave-Jito, both derived from Solana Labs' original code. These two clients dominated the ecosystem, with Agave-Jito at times accounting for over 90% of validator implementations. The introduction of Firedancer, which reportedly handled over 1 million transactions per second during testing, is a significant step towards mitigating centralization risks and potential network failures due to software bugs.
Firedancer has already been in production for about 100 days on select validators. The development team at Jump Crypto envisions this new client as a complete rewrite, incorporating several upgrades. The hybrid "Frankendancer" client, which combines aspects of Agave and Firedancer, has gained traction, with over 26% of validators adopting it. This suggests a positive trend in the community's willingness to embrace new technologies. Solana is also preparing for a major protocol update called Alpenglow, which aims to reduce block finality times to around 150 milliseconds and overhaul the Proof-of-History consensus algorithm.
